MM shows the third pane on its own causing marking unread messages

Reported by Robert Brenstein | January 4th, 2018 @ 02:53 PM

I am using MM in 3-pane mode but with message preview/view pane hidden, that is showing only the pane with mailboxes on the left and mailbox content list on the right. I have reported lately an issue when messages were marked automatically as read (cf. #1898) which you correctly identified as being caused by the message pane being non-zero size. At the time, I thought I could have accidentally change that. It seems that MM is at fault, though. I have experienced a few instances when MM showed the message pane on its own. See the attached screencast for an example. Going to source not always does this. Sometimes going back to original mailbox triggers this behavior. In general, certain switching of list views does it, but not always.

This behavior is something new. I have been using MM full time for a year and I haven't seen this until recent upgrade. I am currently using version 1.10 (5443).

I truly wish you could implement a formal 2-pane view (cf. ticket #1677).

Switching layout can certainly do it (since some layouts cannot hide or doesn't have the message view).

“Go to Source” also appears to fail to keep the view hidden. I'm not sure why that happens, but I'll note it.

I'll consider a dedicated 2-pane view, but it would be kind of redundant if hiding the message view always worked correctly :)

Fixed the “Go to Source” problem (and related problems) by making sure the hidden state of views is also “re-used”.

Quick job! looking forward to the next update.

A dedicated 2-pane view would formalize that state. It can be seen as somewhat redundant, although it is not quite so. For example, one could switch between the 2-pane and 3-pane views, with the latter retaining the pane sizes. I can see a number of other things that speak for it, including instant clarity when calling for support (instead of having to explain that it is a 3-pane view with msg pane hidden).

The 2-pane layout will be in the next update.
