Content of winmail.dat is not displayed

Reported by René Pirringer | November 21st, 2017 @ 07:43 AM

I have received a mail from someone using outlook and the content is within a winmail.dat attachment that is not extracted. As far as I remember MailMate should support messages with winmail.dat content.
I have attached a screenshot of how the message looks in MailMate.

I using the latest Version: 1.9.7 (5425)

Yes, it should work, but it does seem (on my machine on Sierra) that winmail.dat attachments are shown even when they have been extracted. It wasn't always like that. But I guess that is not the problem you have (there would also be a comment in the display about any attachments extracted).

Is it an email which you can share with me using “Help ▸ Send Feedback”? (Just drag the email into the Composer window.)

You should have received a mail with a test message as attachment.

    • State changed from “new” to “reproduced”

The tnef command used by MailMate fails to extract the attachments. I think the problem is a combination of a corrupted winmail.dat file (or at least an unusual one) and a problem with tnef. When trying to reproduce the issue I got different behavior from tnef depending on how I used it (separate file or stdin). I'm not sure I can easily work around this problem.

In any case, you should ask your correspondent to disable the creation of winmail.dat which there really is no reason to do. I think the following describes how to disable it.
