Unable to synchronize specific mailbox

Reported by Steve Mayer | September 26th, 2011 @ 07:36 PM

When attempting to synchronize a particular mailbox on my work IMAP server, I'm getting an error dialog asking if I want to retry, take the account offline or take the mailbox offline. Here's what's showing up in the console log:

9/26/11 12:32:39.155 PM [0x0-0x3ae3ae].com.freron.MailMate: Warning: An unspecified error was reported by the IMAP code. This should never happen.
9/26/11 12:32:39.155 PM [0x0-0x3ae3ae].com.freron.MailMate: IMAP-related error (1): Unspecified error.
9/26/11 12:32:41.945 PM [0x0-0x3ae3ae].com.freron.MailMate: Warning: An unspecified error was reported by the IMAP code. This should never happen.
9/26/11 12:32:41.945 PM [0x0-0x3ae3ae].com.freron.MailMate: IMAP-related error (1): Unspecified error.

What other information can I send you?

Thanks,

Steve

    • Assigned user set to “benny”

Hold down shift when clicking “Retry”. That should put a log file of the retry attempt on your desktop which you can send to me privately (if it contains sensitive data).

    Thanks in advance.

    Benny,

I'm not able to find a method for sending you the log file privately. Can you fill me in?

    Thanks,

    Steve

Sorry for being vague. You can use “Help ▸ Send Feedback” within
MailMate or use the link for direct feedback at the contact page on the
    homepage: http://freron.com/contact/

    • State changed from “new” to “resolved”

Via private email this problem has been tracked down to a particular message which caused the following output from a (buggy) oracle server:

    S: * 1594 FETCH (UID 2906 BODY[] {0}
    S: )

According to Steve the problematic message was a “screwed up mime-encoded message containing a MS Word Doc”. The problem was solved by deleting the message on the server.

I have improved the error output from MailMate when something like this happens, but MailMate is still going to fail synchronizing the mailbox.

Quick question. Mail.app didn't fail on this message. Why would MailMate have the issue?

If Apple Mail is able to fetch the message then it must be because it
uses different IMAP commands. I’m guessing here, but I think Mail
first fetches the MIME structure of the message and then later fetches
large attachments. Maybe that means that anything but the attachment
works fine. MailMate fetches the entire message (which in theory should
be a simple task for the server) and maybe that fails completely because
the server cannot handle the attachment.

Unfortunately I cannot really do any testing without a server and an
account which exhibits the problem. The basic theory is still that it is
    primarily a server bug.

Completely understand. Thanks for the explanation!
