Unify Quote Level Colors

Reported by infotexture | August 3rd, 2011 @ 03:46 PM

Quote level colors should be the same in compose & reading views.

Currently, compose views use different colors for each quoting level (black, blue, green, olive per MmMessageTextView/display.plist), but reading views use shades of blue that are nearly indistinguishable (per MmMessagesWebView/stylesheet.css).

I would expect the colors to be the same regardless of the current view, and suggest adjusting the factory defaults for consistency.

While I realize these settings can be changed per the “Low-Level Customization” instructions in the Help, it would be nice if this was not necessary.

    • State changed from “new” to “accepted”
    • Assigned user set to “benny”

I see your point. I'll see if I can decide on a set of colors which looks better than black/blue/green/olive and are more distinguishable than the shades of blue. Suggestions are welcome.

It would be nice if both sets of colors could be configured in one place, but this is non-trivial.

Sorry about the late response (Lighthouse has a bug which means I do not receive all new tickets by email).

I use a palette based on the OS X graphite scheme, but this may be a bit too monochromatic for many users, since the shades are very close to one another.

To help distinguish the levels without using very loud colors, I added background colors to draw a box around each level.

I'm attaching my version for your reference.

Thanks! I'll try that out myself for some time and see how I like it.

And a technical note. Both the standard stylesheet and any custom
stylesheet is used for the display. You should therefore only include
what you actually change. That'll ensure fewer surprises when/if I
change the standard stylesheet (which I just did for the attachments by
the way, so this is important).

I have attached an edited version of your stylesheet.

Seems attaching via email didn't work...

When deciding on default colors, you might want to follow what Apple uses in Lion Mail to ease the transition for those who switch.

On my system, levels 1-3 are set to Midnight (blue), Magnesium (gray), and Eggplant (purple) from the Crayons color palette, but I don't recall whether I ever customized this in the past or if these are the Lion defaults.
