Consecutive Hyphens

I'm trying to create a markdown table in the compose window, but
when I type three consecutive dashes, they get condensed to one
dash and the table doesn't render. When I paste three consecutive
dashes from a text editor it works.
How do I stop this behavior with consecutive dashes when writing
markdown in the compose window?
