Inconsistent (and I think incorrect) markdown rendering in quotations

Reported by Yogananda | January 27th, 2017 @ 12:04 AM

Hi there!

I notice that if a block quote contains Markdown, sometimes MailMate renders it as formatted text, and sometimes it doesn’t. Here are screenshots of draft responses to two (plaintext) messages:

Note that in the first image, **formatted** text renders as formatted in the block quote text in the preview, whereas in the second image the **formatted** renders as **formatted**. I find that the case in which the markdown does not render is far more common — it seems to happen whenever the responded-to message contains HTML. However, in this case it is also happening with a plaintext message.

What's going on here?

Thanks!

Hi Benny — is there any update on this? It's rather a bummer to not be able to apply basic formatting in quoted material most of the time.

    Thanks!

    Sorry about the late response!

When replying to a message then MailMate cannot (most of the time) know whether or not the quoted text can be trusted to be Markdown. In these cases, the safe approach is to assume it is not Markdown.

MailMate currently lacks a way to explicitly tell it to trust the quoted text of a message -- which is what you need here. I'll take this ticket as an implicit feature request.

(It might be a bit under-prioritized because I don't see this much myself. Most of my correspondents are using MailMate themselves which is obviously not the typical scenario.)

    ...

I looked into how hard it would be to add and I've now added a custom key binding named assumeQuotedTextIsMarkdown: which I'll use for testing. So at least there is a bit of progress :)

    Hi Benny — no worries!

The custom keybinding sounds like a great option — I hope to see it in a release soon!

    Thanks!

It's in the latest test release: Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane. Let me know how it works out for you.

Great — I'll try it out!

I haven't done extensive tests or anything, but this seems to work great so far. Is there a way to toggle it off once it's set? Thanks for the quick turn-around on this!

It's not easily changed into being a toggle although it does make sense. Maybe some other time.
