Can't send mail

Reported by FlyboyArt | January 7th, 2017 @ 01:45 AM

Once in a while I get an email that just can't be sent. The address is valid but it comes back with an error saying the domain is invalid. It's an address in Australia so it has a @<domain.com.au address. Perhaps the .com.au is not being parsed properly?

This happens to addresses in Switzerland too (with a .ch).

See the attached image file of the error window.

OK, so I can not upload an image to show this error so I'll type it in instead:

"Unexpected return code 450 (expecting 250): '4.1.2 name@domain.com.au: Recipient address rejected, Domain Not Found"

    • State changed from “new” to “cantreproduce”

MailMate doesn't really do anything with the email address other than provide it to the SMTP server. If the SMTP server then rejects it then the problem is likely elsewhere. Maybe “Domain Not Found” means that the DNS lookup failed for some reason.

If you want me to verify that MailMate is not doing anything wrong then keep the Activity Viewer (⌥⌘0) open. After you see the error you can use “Help ▸ Send Server Logs” to send logs to me.

Hi Benny, Logs captured and sent you. Their domain works fine (goto www.rivergte.com.au)

    Thanks, Art

Thanks for the logs. Here is the important part (I anonymized the usernames):

    21:48:24 C: MAIL FROM:<xxxxxx@feelin-good.ch> SIZE=1861
    21:48:24 S: 250 2.1.0 Ok
    21:48:24 C: RCPT TO:<xxxxxx@rivergate.com.au>
    21:48:25 S: 450 4.1.2 <xxxxxx@rivergate.com.au>: Recipient address rejected: Domain not found
21:48:25 Error: Unexpected return code 450 (expected 250):

I don't see anything wrong with the email address provided to the server in the RCPT TO line. If you want to verify that the syntax is correct then the RFC is here.

I believe either rivergate has an issue or your SMTP provider. You can send a link to this ticket if you report the issue elsewhere.

I'm sorry I cannot help you.
