Unexpected reply from IMAP server

Reported by Jodie Ward | December 20th, 2016 @ 06:35 PM

Hi,

I've been using Postbox for awhile now but since their update i've run into some issues and they've refunded me, I tried Thunderbird but didn't have much luck with it, so i've now got MailMate, it seemed fine until I started adding my IMAP emails... for some reason i'm not seeing all of my emails, and when clicking my main email address and syncing that email address, I get an error saying Unexpected reply from IMAP server, I also had an error previously which then send me 2 emails saying they couldn't get emails or a folder from my server (I had 2 custom folders called work and bike, which I put specific emails in to)... so i've now gone onto my webmail for my website host and have deleted those folders and have put emails into an archive folder instead, but still MailMate just isn't working properly, I don't know how to explain it, but all of my emails aren't showing up etc.

Given your general issues with email clients I suspect the problem is at least somewhat related to the IMAP server, but let's try to get some more details. Try generating logs like this:

    • Open the Activity Viewer (⌥⌘0). This enables logging.
    • Wait for 1 or more of these errors to occur.
    • Use “Help ▸ Send Server Logs”.

Even if the server is to blame my general policy is to do what I can to work around server bugs. But I cannot make any promises. It depends on what the problem is.

In case it was an implicit question: I can also provide a refund if MailMate is not working as expected.

    Hey,

I use webmail from my hosts website and never have issues with that, no problems sending emails, receiving them, putting them into folders etc etc, but with the Postbox I was having an issue when sending mail, it wouldn't send the emails to the sent folder, and with running a business where I use emails numerous times daily, I need to know whether they've actually sent, but the constant error messages from Postbox saying the emails haven't gone to the sent folder was annoying.

With Thunderbird, I just didn't really get on with the overall look and functionality of it.

I just opened up MailMate and it did the whole syncing thing, and then this pops up:

    Unexpected reply from IMAP server
MailMate encountered the following error: “Failed to fetch data for 1 messages.”.
    Mailbox: “INBOX/Trash/Archive”.
This indicates a server bug. You can tell MailMate to always ignore messages involved in this type of error (for this account) or you can temporarily ignore the messages with the following UIDs: “22,23,24”.
    (Always Ignore) (Retry) (Temporarily Ignore)

I've gone onto my webmail on my host website (iPage) and have moved the archive folder from the trash (not sure why it was in there) to the rest of the folders, i've restarted MailMate but got this error:

MailMate encountered the following error: “Failed to fetch data for 1 messages.”.
    Mailbox: “INBOX/Archive”.
This indicates a server bug. You can tell MailMate to always ignore messages involved in this type of error (for this account) or you can temporarily ignore the messages with the following UIDs: “6,7,8”.

I'm not sure what to do regarding custom folders, whatever custom ones I have I keep getting these errors, and I cant keep them in 'inbox'.

I don't think the location of the mailboxes matter. The problem appears to be some emails within one or more of these mailboxes. These are the ones MailMate offers you to simply ignore. But if you generate logs as I described in my first reply then I can probably tell you more about exactly how/why it fails.

Webmail itself works simply because it very likely does not access emails via IMAP. (Some providers create a webmail client and then, as an afterthought, adds support for IMAP access. Unfortunately such support is very often very buggy. You might be better off by simply switching to a different provider. Not for the purpose of using MailMate, but for the purpose of being able to use any email client and to be able to trust the email server.)

That's the thing, my email is designs@urbankaos.co.uk urbankaos.co.uk being my website, where people email me worldwide and have done since 2013, i've never had issues but now I seem to be......

I'm not sure really how to use these clients, and it's annoying having to log in to a website each time for emails, and having different emails for different parts of the company as well, I can only access 1 at a time on the Roundcube Webmail website...

On my mobile, I use myMail App, that uses IMAP and I have all of my email addresses on there, and never have issues with that either, sending or receiving and so on, and all folders show up etc...

Regarding what you said, i'm not sure exactly what i'm supposed to be doing or sending, i've gone onto MailMate and Help and gone onto the Activity Viewer which shoes 5 IMAPs for my 5 accounts and 5 SMTPs, the errors i'm getting are for my main designs@urbankaos.co.uk email, so i've clicked on the arrow for that one and it has:

Hi Jodie, I'm very sorry about the late reply. For some reason your comment was marked as spam by lighthouseapp (this some times happens for no apparent reason and there's no easy way for me to be notified about it).

If it's not too late. What I meant by generating logs was my first reply in this ticket:

    • Open the Activity Viewer (⌥⌘0). This enables logging.
    • Wait for 1 or more of these errors to occur.
    • Use “Help ▸ Send Server Logs”.

That'll generate an email which you can send to me and then I can review exactly what happens when the error occurs.

Again, sorry about the long delay.
