Mailboxes don't synchronize (always...)

Reported by Edwin Willems | December 16th, 2016 @ 06:37 PM

I'm using Mailmate on 2 Mac's, and have often problems that the synchronisation of mailboxes with the IMAP mail server does not happen... (fast enough)
EXAMPLE:
- in my inbox are 20 messages. I'm reading 15 of them, and either deleting them or moving to other mailboxes. So I've 5 messages left in my inbox. It often happens that - even eg a few hours later- there are still more than 5 messages in my inbox on the other Mac. Eg messages I've moved to mailbox X are still in the inbox on the other Mac. It's when I go to mailbox x (click on the mailbox) on the first Mac that he starts synchronising with the server, and only then the message disappears from the inbox on the other mac and is moved to that mailbox X.

I've put Synchronization schedule to 'every 5 minutes'.

The client->server synchronization should happen immediately disregarding the scheduling setting. The server->client synchronization should be at most 5 minutes as you have configured, but if it's the INBOX then it should happen immediately.

In other words, something is not working correctly. Do you have any persistent spinners on either machine which would indicate that MailMate is busy doing something else?

Anything greyed out under SOURCES in the mailbox list?

Ok, essentially the delay can be in 3 places:

    • In MailMate on the source machine.
    • On the server.
    • In MailMate on the destination machine.

    You can try the following:

    • Open the Activity Viewer (⌥⌘0) on both machines.
    • Move a message away from the INBOX on 1 machine.
    • Wait for it to synchronize on the other machine.
    • Use “Help ▸ Send Server Logs” on both machines.

Then I'll review the timing of events to get closer to an answer.

(One or both of the machines might be on an unstable network, that is, the connection to the INBOX might be lost without MailMate knowing about. But this shouldn't result in delays as long as those you describe.)

moved 1 mail to another mailbox and it’s still in inbox on the other mac
deleted 1 mail, and it immediately synchronised on the other mac
=> the ‘move to other mailbox’ didn’t synch properly Have sent both logs about 10 minutes ago.
Have niw checked on the server - the message (that was moved from INBOX to another folder) is still in the inbox on the server, so apparently the issue is on the source machine...

Thanks for the logs. I agree that the problem is likely the source machine. The logs do not show any errors, but they do show a lot of activity. I think the problem might be a very large number of mailboxes. I would suggest that you select the parent mailbox of all of these mailboxes and set a synchronization schedule at more than 10 minutes. Note that this does not change client->server synching. This still happens immediately. It also does not affect the INBOX which is always synchronized immediately.

Benny, I've put the syncing at 30 minutes. My first impression is that it seems to move in the right direction... Won't declare victory yet, but some testing shows positive signals. I'll keep you informed and let you know within a week time or so whether the issue seems to be addressed or not with this change. Thanks anyway and happy holidays!
