Keychain Issues

Reported by Robert | November 16th, 2016 @ 10:14 AM

After upgrading to Sierra Mailmate has some issues with the keychain.

Mailmate signs in to my mail accounts without any problems when I start it. After the laptop wakes up from sleep or whenever the screensaver is deactivated Mailmate asks me for the various passwords to my mail accounts stating that "Password does not exist in keychain". The passwords do exist in keychain however. So I cancel the operation which takes the account offline. After clicking on the affected account and choosing "take online" everything works until the laptop goes to sleep again or the screen saver kicks in.

Why on Earth is this still happening after being reported nearly six years ago?

I've been having this exact problem with the latest version of MailMate [Version 1.13.2 (5673)] -every so often all of my accounts appear to go offline with MailMate asking for the password and saying no matching password was found in the keychain. When I check the keychain, the passwords are all there.

An internet search led me to various bug reports, including this one, citing the same thing.

I was on the point of buying MailMate, after 'test driving' it for a few weeks. But, quite frankly, I've changed my mind after seeing how a fundamental usability issue like this has gone unfixed for so long.

@stuzbot: You can certainly find many unresolved tickets in the ticket system. Some times they really are unresolved and some times I've just never had the time to clean them up. It's a one-man business and I often prioritize working on MailMate itself without answering/updating all issues/emails. In general, if a user has an unresolved issue then it's always fine to remind me!

With respect to this issue. The current public release is pretty old and there's a good chance that the latest beta or test release will work better: Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane to get the latest test release.

If the issue persists with the test release then we can try to debug it. The best will be if there is some set of reproducible steps although I know this can some times be hard. In particular when network connections are involved. It's always the issues only affecting some users which are the hardest to fix.

In any case, thanks for considering and trying out MailMate.

I appreciate that you're a one man band and have to prioritise. But surely reliably sending & receiving email should be the number one priority for any email app?

When MailMate starts misbehaving with these spurious "no matching password was found in the keychain" errors, I'm never sure whether the message actually got sent or not. Sometimes it sits in the Drafts folder. Sometimes it moves to the Sent folder. Sometimes it stays in the Drafts folder but also appears in the Sent folder. Sometimes I check online via webmail and find that the email did go after all, even though MailMate shows it still languishing in the Drafts folder. So I'm never certain whether the recipient never received it at all... or received it multiple times, when I kept trying to re-send it because MailMate said it didn't go. And, of course, in amongst all of this, there's these constant messages popping up telling me I need to enter my password again.

Sorry. But it's just not good enough --especially for a paid app. And one with a pretty high price tag at that.

First of all, if a message is moved to the Sent Messages folder then it has been sent. MailMate is very careful about that. Appearing in both Drafts and Sent Messages might happen if multiple email clients are involved. I'm not sure when/if it could happen with a specific order of events within MailMate, but if it's in Sent Messages then it's definitely sent.

Whenever a composer window shows up with an error then MailMate has stopped trying to send the message. Cancelling should make it remain in Drafts and Drafts only. If there is some order of steps which results in a message being in both Drafts and Sent Messages then I'm naturally very interested. In particular with the latest test release since a lot has change in MailMate since the public release.

This specific problem is not a general problem reported by many users. It has also never happened for me personally. It is likely related to some specific order of events, network changes, and/or some periodic problem with the keychains. This could even be a macOS bug.

I'm glad you found out MailMate is not for you before purchasing, but note that I do also provide refunds when requested. I only want happy users.

Finally, the price tag might be high, but MailMate is a niche email client. It has a small user base with specific requirements. The price doesn't mean that MailMate is perfect (bug free) or complete (works for any use case).
