SMTP return code 501, should be 334?

Reported by lars_olsson (at fastmail) | June 5th, 2011 @ 03:55 PM

Hi. I'm still in the testing phase of using MM. It works well with everything except, to my dismay, my own email server (running off a MacMini and using Bernard Teo's MailServe Pro). Whenever I try to send mail through MM from my self-hosted account, I get the following error message (see attached file).

I took MM's advice and opened the activity window before I tried to send again. Doing so allowed me to see the EHLO command, followed by STARTTLS, and finally AUTH PLAIN, which is where it got stuck again and popped up the same error message as before. I don't know what codes 501 or 334 are - although I suspect 501 is a generic error code. But I can't find any information on 334. Is my server mis-configured in some way, or is this an issue with MM itself? I should note that I can create the account for my self-hosted server in Mail.app, Thunderbird and several other email applications, and it sends and receives just fine. Any thoughts?

334 is fine. It is just a request from the server for more data.

Could you write me a private email (feedback link in the Help menu of MailMate). I'd like you to try a cutting edge version and I'd like to see some of the logging (copy/paste it to the email). Passwords are automatically hidden in the log text.

    Thanks for trying out MailMate!

Just remembered a problem with some SMTP servers. Do you use qmail for SMTP?

(This particular problem resurfaced in r2175, but will soon be fixed..)

I use whatever the baked-in OSX postfix SMTP uses. Not sure if that's qmail. Will send you private email in a moment.

I believe this problem has been fixed. If this is not the case then you can reopen the ticket. Thanks.
