simple typographic formatting in an email message

Is it possible to code italics or boldface for words or phrases in an outgoing MailMate message?

Using Markdown it is possible. This works better in the latest test release of MailMate (r5256+) in which ⌘B and ⌘I also works: Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane.
