Open a message on a secondary monitor

I have my MacBook connected to a second screen. When I move MailMate to the big screen, I'd like it to open messages on that screen when I double-click.
I've looked for a setting for this, and googled extensively, but I can't find anything.
The strange thing is I'm sure it sometimes behaves the way I want. But I can't work out what sequence of steps make it do so.
To be clear: as it is now, I have the main window open on the big monitor, and when I double-click on a message it opens on the laptop screen, not the big one.
