Trying to store emails on external encrypted volume crashes MailMate

On my Mac I am not using full disk encryption but instead I use separate encrypted volumes that are mounted under /Volumes. If I try to select encrypted volume and directory for MailMate to store/cache my email, it does not follow it, but instead tries to write them under ~/com.freron.MailMate. If I replace this directory with symbolic link to directory on the encrypted volume, Mailmate crashes when it tries to write email files to directory.
Can I do something to fix this or provide more information/log about the crash so that this problem could be fixed?
