PGP signing error even though only S/MIME is enabled

When I click a mailto: link, the composer window in Mailmate opens with signing disabled, even though I have signing set to always. I then switch signing on, but when I send the mail, I get the error in the attached screenshot.
My MM security settings are set to use only S/MIME, sign by default is set to always, encrypt by default is on never.
