Incoming email working fine, outgoing messages are stuck in Drafts

#962

My email messages are not going out -- currently the 33 I wrote yesterday are still in "Drafts." (I just discovered them there, when a few recipients said that they hadn't gotten my notes, which I knew I had sent -- there wasn't any error or warning sign that they had not been sent.) How can I "release" them? Does this mean the program isn't somehow connecting to the outgoing mail server (and if so, how should I address)? Nothing has changed in my network, my account, or my email process. I rebooted the computer, and the problem remained.

My system: MailMate/4576 MacBookAir5,2/x86_64/4/10.10.0

I should add to this -- the program also seems to be freezing -- also suddenly, no idea what might have changed to make it so. (SpamSieve is freezing too.) This doesn't always happen, but when I relaunch/reboot, it is recurrent (at least today).

    Maybe it's a Yosemite issue?

The 33 (now 34) messages are still stuck in "Drafts." I tell MailMate to synchronize all accounts, and also to synchronize Drafts, and nothing happens. Incoming messages work fine; outgoing is not working at all.

The only other information I can think of is a few days ago I tested Google's Inbox app on my phone (not on my computer). I only used it for a couple of messages, didn't really like it, and stopped. But could that be somehow related?

This kind of behaviour indicates that MailMate is told by the system that the server is not reachable. This is unfortunately a silent error, but I've had several reports about this in the past few weeks (maybe something changed with Yosemite for some users, but it might just be a coincidence).

    What are your SMTP settings?

There is an experimental version of MailMate available in which I have changed the SMTP behavior. To get it, hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane in MailMate.

Maybe we should deal with the freezing issue after resolving the SMTP issue, but for the record, you can create a report for me when it happens like this:

    sample MailMate 5 --file ~/Desktop/sample_mailmate.txt

This happened to me on Sunday. I restarted MailMate and the half-dozen messages all went out.

My mail server is in the same room as my laptop.

If there is anything I can add to help debug this, let me know (Version 1.8 (4576)).

@Des: If it happens regularly then you can help me by trying out the test version to see if it resolves the issue:

@Des and @Douglas: My test release instructions were incorrect. I thought the test version (r4587) included the SMTP change, but it appears it is only part of one my 64 bit test releases. It should be quite stable, but I cannot promise there won't be any other issues. Here is a direct link for the 64 bit release. Sorry about the confusion.

    My smtp settings are:
    smtp.gmail.com
    Require SSL

At some point this morning, the accumulated mail (about three dozen messages) went out successfully -- all at once, in a bunch. I don't know why, because I hadn't done anything different.

If it recurs, I'l try again with the 64 bit release at the direct link you provided above.

    Thanks!

@Douglas: Thanks for the update. I'll mark the ticket as cantreproduce, but you are still welcome to add comments.

@Des: Off topic question if you return to this ticket: I often see people comment to tickets without enabling “watching” the ticket which means you get no email notifications when I answer. Lighthouse tells me that watching is enabled by default when commenting, but I kind of doubt that works as expected. Did you explicitly select not to watch the ticket?

    Benny,

Not to my knowledge. I monitor the feed on RSS in any case.

The problem came back, so I've installed your updated version, from the direct link above. Accumulated messages went out immediately. I'll let you know if it recurs.

@Douglas: Thanks. I suggest you enable fetching beta releases in the Software Update preferences pane as well.

I'll do that. The program worked very slowly a couple of times this morning -- it was trying to fetch messages, and I saw only the Apple spinning beach ball while it did. But overall it's an improvement, as the underlying issue of messages getting "stuck" in Drafts hasn't recurred. Thanks!
