App hanging when opened
Reported by Benjamin Stiglitz | November 18th, 2013 @ 04:22 PM
I’ve found that MailMate is now regularly hanging when opening. I’ve attached two samples to this ticket, as well as the last parsing logs from ${TMPDIR}.
I’m happy to provide extra details outside of this forum about my setup or my mail database if that’d help.

For what it’s worth this is also happening on another machine that fetches mail from the same server. I wonder if it’s message related. (I know there is an issue with an automated system I receive mail from right now throwing lots of extra =s in mime responses and screwing things up badly, as evidenced by the attached logs.)

I can see from the output that you are dealing with a very large account. MailMate is designed to put everything in one big pool of messages and then everything is derived from that. This is very flexible, but it doesn't scale so well. To give some rough numbers: 100K messages is fine, 500K is possible with powerful hardware, and 1 mio. is probably impossible. (I would of love to do more optimizations, but I don't currently have time for it.)
If you do think it's message-related then you could try using “Edit Subscriptions” before adding the account (if starting over) and then add fewer mailboxes. Let them fully synchronize before adding more.
Where did you see the
=s

Sorry for the very long delay! I found that both machines sitting open all day eventually got past whatever was getting them gummed up and I was a happy user! Unfortunately one of my machines is stuck again, but this time it’s not reproducing on my other machine attached to the same server with the same subscriptions. I’ll attach another sample.
The extra equals signs I mentioned were come from a server with a very broken MIME encoder, but that issue was fixed back in November and I deleted those messages anyhow since they’re just automated notifications.
(As for account size: I often deal with legal requests that prevent me from deleting mail, and I regularly search my multi-year archive of mailing lists, so large account support is important to me in the long term.)

Also sorry about the long delay. The second sample seems to indicate that the problem is triggered by a message arriving. It might be a performance problem with a smart mailbox. Could you provide me with this file:
~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Mailboxes.plist
With respect to large accounts then it might be an advantage to keep old messages server-side only. (If you rarely need them.)
