Fastmail duplicate sent messages Issues !
Reported by Limak | August 7th, 2013 @ 09:35 AM
Hi
I am having the following issues with my only IMAP account "Fastmail":
a) When I send a message from MailMate, it creates a folder
named "Sent Messages" and saves a copy to both "Sent Items" and
"Sent Messages".
b) The message in "Sent Messages" has the time stamped 30mins ahead
of the current time. But, on the Fastmail it is stamped 60mins
ahead.

This duplication issue does not occur in mail.app after I disabled "Store sent messages on server". How could I do the same in MailMate?
Thanks

You cannot disable storing sent messages on the server in MailMate. MailMate does not support local-only messages which means the only way to support it would be by discarding sent messages.
MailMate does not save 2 copies. The problem is probably that Fastmail places a copy in Sent Items after using their SMTP server.
Three things to try:
-
Use “Mailbox Type” in the Mailbox menu (or context sensitive menu) when the Sent Items mailbox is selected to select the “Sent Messages” type. That might allow Fastmail to detect what MailMate is trying to do.
-
Go through Fastmail settings to see if you can disable any setting that automatically places a copy in Sent Items after sending a message (this is non-standard behavior by the way although Gmail does the same).
-
Use a different SMTP server than the one provided by Fastmail.
The date issue is really strange. If you like you can send me a pair of messages and I'll see what I can derive from that (Help ▸ Send Feedback).

- State changed from new to fixcommitted
The date issue turned out to be a bug in MailMate related to “in-between” time zones such as +0530. This is fixed for future releases.
I've closed the ticket, but it can be reopened if the Sent Messages issue cannot be resolved with the suggestions above.

So, Fastmail does have a way of not putting sent messages into the Sent folder. But I rather like that behavior for other mail clients I use, like on my phone. It would still be great if I could turn this auto-uploading off in MailMate. So consider this a feature request for that setting. :)

@Magnus: I guess the only solution would be to permanently delete sent messages in MailMate (I would not prefer that myself). This can be done by:
- enabling experimental features in the General preferences pane
- add a rule to the Sent Messages mailbox of MailMate which only matches these messages (hopefully they somehow differ from what Fastmail puts in the mailbox)
- make this rule delete the message twice (this should delete it immediately instead of moving it to Deleted Messages)
I have not tried the above.

I would like to report, that this is still an ongoing problem for me. Every message send via Fastmail is duplicated in the "Sent Items" folder. None of the primary methods suggested in this thread solved my issue. I haven't tried to use non-fastmail smtp, but this doesn't seem as a viable solution. Even if there is a way to disable the Sent folder in the fastmail UI (I haven't found it yet), I would rather not use this method, as I am using other clients and the Web Interface as well.
Fastmail has an option to remove dupes from a folder, but this isn't working for me. I will place a ticket about this at Fastmail.
Lastly, I've enabled the 2.0 experimental features, but I have no idea how to enable to "Apply Rules" menu item. No matter where I click, this option is always grayed. http://cl.ly/100O1a2o1h3J
Currently I am using MU with Offlineimap to remove the dupes on a regular basis, but I though that it is worth to mention that this is still an issue for some people and this thread is the only resonable result while Googling for solution.

+1 on this issue.
Fastmail is a very popular provider, so presumably others are having this problem too.
Any solutions found?

Nothing new to offer on this “issue”, but I've written a bit more about it in ticket #2145.
