Raw View Is Broken In Recent Test Builds

Reported by Bill Cole | December 6th, 2022 @ 04:03 PM

When I select "View->Show Raw Message" with any message, I get what looks identical to "Show HTML Source" instead of the actual raw RFC822-format message. Within the message, common characters such as '><' are replaced with HTML Entities. This behavior changed roughly around r5918.

This hampers the ability to report some spam, e.g. to providers who require undamaged original messages as plain text.

I cannot recall if r5918 specifically was buggy, but the related code has changed a few times with test releases. Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane to get the latest test release to see the current state (r5933).

I've also been tinkering with making the raw view use a plain text view instead of a webview which could/should make it perform better. This is incomplete, but you can try that out as well if you like:

defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmBodyTextViewForRawEnabled -bool YES

(This will not work in r5918.)

Updating to r5933 and adding that setting has changed only the background color of the definitely-not-plaintext "raw" view. It's now white instead of gray. Not really a useful change :)

It seems to me I must be missing something obvious :)

    What is your macOS version?

Could you perhaps send me a screenshot via “Help > Send Feedback”?

Screenshot sent. My system: MailMate/5933/F1E8FEE8-5BCE-5DD6-8E23-8DFC7020720A 10.15.7/x86_64/MacBookPro15,2/8

Note: This was also occurring on an iMac with 10.15.7 (Catalina) but is NOT happening on that machine since I upgraded to Big Sur (macOS 11)

Update: Updating the MacBook with the issue to Big Sur eliminated the problem.

It is odd that even after I have both machines running the same macOS and MM versions, one has a "raw" view with colorized headers and the other has simple black and white.
