can not change the default downloads folder

This is a bit of a problem - I set-up a custom default downloads folder in preferences. I need to change this folder but mai mate will not save the new default downloads folder once I re-start mailmate. I have tried different folders, and also tried using the default downloads folder location. But when MailMate starts up it reverts to the olde folder location - even when the older folder no longer exists!
System:
MailMate 1.14 (5815)
MacOS 11.5 (Big Sur)
Chip: Apple M1 Silicon
