Activiting/raising other app from MailMate

I would like to open another app from a bundle, and switch the focus from MailMate to the other app, and activate (i.e. raise) the window of the other app. I have tried with Finder and iTerm2, and I managed to open the other app and create a window, but the new window would not receive the focus.
I vaguely remember that this used to work a long time ago with Finder, but I am not sure.
Is there maybe some code in MailMate that prevents another app to receive the focus?
