Connection problem with Office365

just enrolled in a college that uses office365 for email. I would like to use MM for this student email account.
the office365 settings are shown to be:
imap: outlook.office365.com - port 993 - encryption TLS
smtp: smtp.office365.com - port 587 - encryption STARTTLS
I'm getting an error message:
Enter password for “shubbard27@student.cccs.edu” at “outlook.office365.com”
Server response: “A2 NO LOGIN failed.”. Command attempted: “A2 LOGIN ••••••••••”.
Note: If you use two-step verification or two-factor authentication then you probably need an application specific password.
Please enter password for user name “s*****@****.edu”.
I'm using the same password that allows me to use the web-based office365 email
[I loath MS software]
is this really an authentication issue or an indication of something else?

You might need an application specific password if two factor authentication is enabled. Googling I found this which might help.
If that doesn't help then let me know.
