Version 5655 can't print messages

Reported by Robert Brenstein | October 11th, 2019 @ 02:37 PM

After upgrading to Version 1.13 (5655) from 1.12.x, we can’t seem to print individual messages. Selecting Print keeps the File menu highlighted for a moment but the print dialog does not show up. The Page Setup dialog shows up normally, when the menu item is selected. The problem occurs on two different computers, a Mac mini and a MacBook Pro, under El Capitan 10.11.6. I am using 2-pane view opening messages in own windows, while my wife uses 3-pane view.

The issue definitely started after the upgrade. I print seldom but my wife prints regularly.

I also upgraded another computer, a MacBook Pro running High Sierra 10.13.6, and here printing works fine after the upgrade.

I posted the problem on the mailing list and at least one user confirmation similar issue albeit with macOS 10.10.

I believe this is an issue with the new printing code on 10.10/10.11. I'm not really sure it can be properly fixed, but as a short term solution, the latest test release uses the old printing code on 10.10/10.11.

This should at least work as long as I haven't fully migrated MailMate to the use of a new message view (still a lot of work to do on that). After that, I'll either disable printing support on 10.10/10.11 or require 10.12 for MailMate to work at all (a lot of users never print which means that requiring 10.12 only for the lack of this feature might be a bad idea).

Note that older releases for older macOS releases are always available on the MailMate website.

(I know 10.11 is only 4 years old, but Apple moves fast on macOS releases and it can be a lot of work to support older releases. Apple themselves have not released a security update for 10.11 since July 2018 which, implicitly, means they have stopped supporting it.)

Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane to try out the “fix”.

Thanks Benny! I can confirm that the fix works.
