Customize From-Address Privacy Risk

Reported by John Smith | February 25th, 2019 @ 07:27 PM

The "customize from-address" dialog needs a dropdown to
explicitly select the account that the mail should be sent from.

Currently this information is not displayed at all and the
mail will be sent from whichever account is associated with
the currently open folder.

This can lead to unpleasant privacy leaks.

Example scenario:

  • I use a different e-mail address for each onlineshop that I order from (foo+shopname@gmail.com)

  • Onlineshop sends me a mail to foo+shopname@gmail.com

  • I reply to that mail (via ⌘R) and edit the from-address to contain foo+shopname@gmail.com again.

  • Mailmate picks my work SMTP (because my 'Inbox' Smart Mailbox is associated with that) which overwrites the from-address with my work email...

    • State changed from “new” to “accepted”

I agree that customizing the From address lacks a way to also explicitly tell MailMate which account to use. It should at least stay in the same account when making a reply.

For the specific example there's a better way than “Customize...”. Tell MailMate the pattern of your non-primary email address(es) using the “Address Pattern” setting in the IMAP accounts window. You can find examples on how to use this feature here.
