  Gmail is special in the sense that it does not itself allow duplicates (IMAP allows it), but when it presents emails to an IMAP client then an email can still occur in multiple IMAP mailboxes -- once for each label in the Gmail interface.

  So, in order to make it work well in MailMate you must identify the labels you use which are not equivalent to IMAP mailboxes. In other words, Gmail labels fall into 2 categories:

  • Labels used like mailboxes, e.g., like Sent Mail.
  • Labels used like tags, e.g., like “Starred” or “Important”. Emails with such a label have some other primary IMAP mailbox location, e.g., the INBOX.

  The latter category needs to be configured in the Tags preferences pane in MailMate such that MailMate knows that the label IMAP mailbox should be ignored. Instead, MailMate treats it like a tag.

  When you see duplicates then you can enable the “Source Mailbox” column in the message list to see where the duplicates are really located. This can help identify the problem. You are welcome to share what you find if you need help with regard to how to solve it.
