Archiving threads moves sent messages to the archive

Reported by Yogananda | January 12th, 2017 @ 01:02 PM

Hi there!

This may be the same issue as #1523, which is currently unanswered. I'll ask anyway, in the hopes that it leads somewhere.

I've created a smart folder to view all my inbox messages as threads, similar to the "Personal Inbox with Threads" example smart folder. However, I notice that when I archive an entire thread, my sent messages in the thread are moved from the Sent Messages folder to the Archive folder.

I understand this behavior, but I'm wondering if there's a fix, or a recommended way of working around this issue (other than "don't do that"). Frankly I don't really see a reason to keep a Sent Messages folder. Is there a good way of not even bothering with a Sent Messages folder and moving sent messages directly to the Archive? Or would this cause problems somehow? Or is there another method that people use? I'd be interested in your thoughts!

Thanks for making MailMate!

Best regards,

Yogananda

    • State changed from “new” to “resolved”

Right now a mailbox can only have 1 type. That is, you cannot assign the Archive mailbox to both be Archive and for Sent Messages. You can add a rule though to the universal Sent Messages folder which moves anything that enters it into the Archive mailbox (no conditions).

With respect to problems: Address completion (Composer prefs pane) relies on Sent Messages and so does identity derivation (getting the right sending identity based on history). Both issues can be fixed by using MmSentMailbox. At some point I will hopefully refactor all of this — including making it possible to remove the universal Sent Messages mailbox completely and automatically not let this affect completion and identity derivation.

Great — thanks for the info! I'll give that a shot!

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Gmail periodically rebuilds the Sent Messages view. Have you heard of this ever being a problem?

    Thanks again!

I don't think I've read about that, but if they do rebuild and thereby trigger new UIDs and/or UIDVALIDITY then it's certainly a performance issue. There's nothing MailMate can do about that. (But I stress that it's not something I've observed or read about.)

Great — thanks again for the info, and for the quick reply!
