Problem authenticating Gmail account

For some reason I am being asked to authenticate my Gmail
account every time I open MailMate. And now, after I have opened it
and authenticated my Google account, it is asking me to do
authenticate it again? It appears it has gone into a loop, asking
me to authenticate over and over?
My system: MailMate/6054 MacBookAir5,2/x86_64/4/10.11.6

I'm having this problem too. It seems to work for a while and then start failing. I have some logs that I emailed to the feedback address.

This is a known issue. Read more here.
@Mark: You can try updating to the latest test release (hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now”). This includes an attempt to work around the issue although it appears that it does not work for some (all?) users.
