Way to edit a message and store it back on the iMAP server?

Reported by Mike Petonic | April 23rd, 2016 @ 12:51 AM

My use case is that sometimes my wonderful colleagues break thread references, and so the "References:" SMTP header gets chopped. I'd like to copy the message-ID of the earlier message and append it to or create the "References:" SMTP header.

Is that possible?

Also, the ability to edit the message would also be helpful in using IMAP as a repository of quick notes that are stored in the related folders.

    • State changed from “new” to “duplicate”

This can only be done by manually dragging an email out of MailMate, edit it in a text editor, and then drag it back to MailMate (and delete the old copy).

Hmm, I guess it wouldn't require much to allow a bundle command to add this functionality. The missing element is that a bundle command cannot tell MailMate to add a new message to the server. I guess this could be useful for other purposes as well.

The “notes” feature is something I've considered in the past. I would like to be able to add notes to emails myself and the notes should be saved in separate emails which MailMate could “hide” (and show as some kind of attached note instead). I haven't made any progress on this yet. For some reason such a feature is rarely requested, but I would find it very useful myself. An RFC exists for IMAP also describing such a feature, but I'm not sure it has been implemented by anyone. This is also a duplicate of ticket #813.

I'll have to mark the ticket as “bluesky” for now, but this does not mean it'll never be implemented.

Thanks for your considered reply, Benny.

Something like this could be useful for other things, too (I'll include the two that I mentioned above, for completeness):

    • Appending a Message ID to another message's Reference header so that broken threads can be fixed.

    • Adding in notes to an email.

    • Adding a different X-Header so that a "X-Displayed-Subject" could be implemented as per aforementioned ticket 813

It wouldn't have to be that robust. Those using this feature would probably use automation (Applescript, Perl, etc.) to modify the file.

    Thanks!
