mailmate is crashing soon after launch

Reported by Bhagwati Gupta | October 28th, 2015 @ 04:25 PM

Mailmate has started to crash since the last 2-3 weeks. Apart from usual Mac OS X updates, I have not installed any new software recently. Few things that I tried included removing pref files, restarting laptop, etc. but no luck. I am running 10.10.5 Yosemite and the latest version of mailmate . After reviewing mailmate crash related issues reported by others in this forum, I used the terminal to launch the program. It appears that crashes are always happening after the following lines:

Warning: Trying to map file of length 0 (/Users/bpg/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Database.noindex/Headers/#server-flags.cache).
rename failed: No such file or directory
old path: '/Users/bpg/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Database.noindex/Headers/#server-flags.offsets', new path: '/Users/bpg/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Database.noindex/Headers/#server-flags.offsets_temp'
Abort trap: 6

I have also attached a detailed report which was generated after the crash, in case this is useful in tracking down the problem.

Please help! I need mailmate to get back to my usual work routine. It is extremely frustrating right now. Thank you very much in advance.

I have just rebuild the database and will watch if mailmate is still crashing. I will update you on this. Thanks.

Sorry about your trouble. Rebuilding the database should fix the crashing, but I'll naturally be very interested if this happens again (is somehow reproducible). For the record, it would probably also have worked to delete the .../#server-flags.* files, but this is not true in general (for other database index files).

Thank you very much for the prompt response. It makes me feel good and continue to use the software. So far everything looks good. I will update if there are any issues. Cheers! And, thank you for producing a GREAT software.

Hi Benny - The crashes have started to happen again this morning. I haven't done anything new since the last time other than reading/writing emails. Please see the messages below.

Warning: Trying to map file of length 0 (/Users/bpg/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Database.noindex/Headers/#server-flags.cache).
    2015-11-04 12:51:56.132 MailMate[49611:7865841] Bartender: Loaded BartenderHelperNinetySix
Problems while parsing reported for one or more messages. Details can be found in

    old path: '/Users/bpg/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Database.noindex/Headers/#server-flags.offsets', new path: '/Users/bpg/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Database.noindex/Headers/#server-flags.offsets_temp'
    Abort trap: 6

And the output of the log file is -
    description = 'Invalid multibyte sequence encountered (iconv / windows-1252)'; content-transfer-encoding = quoted-printable; content-type = 'text/plain'; context = 't\n>> one{E2}{80}{9D}\n>> I don'; file = '/Users/bpg/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Messages/IMAP/bgupta.bio%40gmail.com@imap.gmail.com/INBOX.mailbox/Messages/148129.eml'; url = 'message://D2AD405FAB3A104CA7D97140589CBBD4CADBAE@FHSDB4H16-2.csu.mcmaster.ca';

    Thanks for any help.

Sorry about the late response. I'm a bit stumped with regard to what could cause this. Some times antivirus software can cause weird issues, but this does not seem to be what's happening here. It also does not seem to be totally random behavior since the same database index file is involved in both cases.

I assume you have rebuilt the database once again? If you have then update to the latest test release of MailMate (hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane). Then let me know when/if this happens again and if you can think of any particular usage pattern before the problem appears.

An additional question: Do you use a Gmail account? (Flags are handled a bit differently for Gmail and maybe this somehow plays a role.)

Thanks! This time I followed your previous suggestion and deleted #server-flags.* files. It worked file. There was one more crash after that but things are looking stable for the past 3-4 days. I do use Gmail account. If it helps...I recently started using tags to archive emails in smart folders that are mostly stored in gmail. Could that be an issue? Will moving emails to another platform, e.g., Yahoo, help?

I have just updated the software to the latest r5166 version. It seems fine. There is one warning message in the terminal that I saw repeated 4 times. Other than that there is nothing unusual.

    SecKeychainFindGenericPassword failed with error: -25300

Thanks for following up and the suggestions! It means a lot.

Certainly don't use Yahoo. It's much worse than Gmail.

The fact that you are using tags with Gmail indicates that this might be a MailMate bug. Let me know if you can reproduce it or if it happens relatively often. Then we can debug the issue.

The error messages you saw are just related to MailMate not finding an account password in the keychain.

Just to keep you posted...another crash happened yesterday with output identical to last 3 lines in my previous report (related to server-flags.offsets_temp). I have stopped using tags and smart folders in my gmail account in order to avoid further complications and possible source of crashes (if at all). Today I have updated to the latest release (r5180).

Thanks for the update. It'll be interesting whether or not you continue to have the crashes. I still don't have any similar reports, but I still suspect it is somehow related to mapping of Gmail labels.

Let me know what happens and, in particular, if you find a way to reproduce this issue.
