Search "seems" to stop working?

Reported by Gustavo D Villarreal | September 1st, 2015 @ 10:14 PM

Sometimes my search requests do not give results, or I seem to miss results that I know should be there. After restarting MailMate, I can see the correct results again. I mostly think it must be my fault, maybe I left some field pre-populated, or I am selecting a mailbox instead of all the messages, and so I just restart and thats that, but since it continues happening, I began to think it might be a bug somewhere and not just my fault.

Here is a screenshot of my screen doing a search: http://bit.ly/1JwAjLK
And here is a screenshot of doing the same search after restarting MailMate: http://bit.ly/1hSk19h

Can you spot any obvious issues from my part?

This is version 1.9.2 (5113)

In the screenshots I cannot see the recipient headers which means I cannot verify that both marlin and marlins can be found, but I'll assume this is not the issue. I cannot see any other differences.

It would of course be great if you could reproduce the issue or narrow it down a bit. Maybe it only affects address related headers? Any kind of pattern to this behavior would be helpful.

I'll think about ways to debug an issue like this.

I know you can't see the headers, but you can see that in the "after" screenshot I had three results where before I had none and they are not new emails, with the same search parameters (well it's true I typed marlin and then marlins but it should still show the same results in this case where the To is marlins.com).

Mainly I wanted to see if I was doing something wrong I was not looking at. Haven't seen this issue on the list and I know your user base is pretty thorough.

It has happened also with Subject searches. But I haven't found something that triggers this. Could it be a memory issue? I run this machine 24/7, rarely reboot it, and it's always too loaded with open documents and consequently somewhat sluggish, though it has 16G of RAM.

I'll try to see if there are more clues next time.

The screenshots do not show that 'marlins' is in the To header, but I'll take your word on it.

It's not a memory issue. If anything, it would make MailMate crash.

It's more likely to be some kind of internal state issue which might not be triggered by a special event. How do you work in general with regard to deleting emails. Do you delete most of your incoming emails (permanently) or do you keep most of your emails? I'm asking because this affects how often MailMate cleans up database files and I'm thinking the issue might be related to these cleanups (this would clear up when relaunching MailMate).

I delete few emails manually, but I have SpamSieve acting on my Inbox deleting spam, and also a Smart folder where old mails are moved and exported to so MailSteward archives them for me.

Benny. It happened again. I'm not sure that I did something specific that could have caused it, I didn't delete emails this morning (I think). The only differences I can see are that the "Inbox" boxes seem to change the sorting order between one screenshot and the other, I don't know if this could have any consequence or what, but I didn't change them, I just restarted MailMate.

    Here are both screenshots:

I checked the Smart mailbox that automatically exports old mails, and there are a few mails automatically exported, and thus deleted, during this morning. I don't know if this helps or not, but there were deleted emails.

Ok, thanks for the example. What is (roughly) the total number of messages, e.g., the count of “All Messages”?

When I select the All Messages folder, the count is 8,226 messages.

    Thanks.
