MailMate and Keyboard Maestro

Reported by Erik M-H | March 18th, 2015 @ 03:32 PM

Hello!

Since MailMate 1.9 (5066), I’ve been having a problem invoking Keyboard Maestro macros I’ve set up for use with MailMate. FWIW, these macros take the selected messages, select the Messages > Move to Mailbox... command, wait for the “Move to Mailbox” dialog to show up, and manually type the name of the mailbox I want to move the messages to, ending with a <return> in order to actually move them. These have been working perfectly for about a year.

As of 5066, the macros do still work in MailMate if I tell Keyboard Maestro to make them available no matter what application is active; more naturally, however, I want them available only when I’m actually in MailMate. When I tell Keyboard Maestro to make them available only within MailMate, they no longer trigger.

Was some kind of change made with 5066 that could make MailMate no longer be recognized as MailMate? I have, naturally, tried reselecting the current 5066 version of MailMate in the Applications folder in the appropriate place in Keyboard Maestro, but to no avail....

I'm seeing the same thing with MailMate 1.9.2 (5107) and Keyboard Maestro 6.4.8 on Mac OS X 10.9.5. A macro group set to 'only in MailMate' doesn't actually work when in MailMate.

The workaround I'm using is to put the macros in a global group, but wrap each one in an 'if' block with the condition 'application MailMate is at the front'. That works -- Keyboard Maestro has no problem detecting that MailMate is frontmost in that circumstance.

    • State changed from “new” to “cantreproduce”

Just for the record, I don't know what kind of change could have triggered this. Let me know if any of you figure it out and I'll do what I can to fix it.

I’m sorry I haven’t been more carefully rigorous with this problem. I wish, for example, I now knew what version of Keyboard Maestro I was running when the problem developed.

I can say that like David I now am using MailMate 1.9.2 (5107) and Mac OS X 10.9.5. Unlike David, I am now using Keyboard Maestro 7.0.1. And, without my particularly noticing when, the problem has vanished here.

My strong guess now is that Keyboard Maestro 6.4.8 was to blame, and that the problem developed when I’d updated from 6.4.6 or 6.4.7. (KM 6.4.8 had no problems with macros defined as being available to any other specific applications; only MM; hence my earlier assumption that the problem was with MM.)

David, if you’re in a position to drop back to an earlier 6.4.x Keyboard Maestro or to upgrade to 7.0.1, I’d suggest that might correct the problem for you.

Thanks for the feedback and input, Benny and Erik. I'd upgrade to Keyboard Maestro 7 in a flash, if they'd made it compatible with Mavericks, but unfortunately it's Yosemite-only as far as I know (so maybe you listed your OS version incorrectly above, Erik? :-)).

I'll have a look at the KM release notes to see if there was anything in 6.4.8 I actually needed; otherwise I will try earlier versions to see if I can pinpoint when it broke. But the workaround of adding that extra condition to the macros is good enough for me, so since this certainly sounds like a Keyboard Maestro problem rather than anything wrong with MailMate, I think there's probably nothing more to do -- though I'll report back if I do come across any other info.

Sigh. Yes, I’m running 10.*10*.5, and was running probably 10.*10*.2 or 3 when I reported the problem.
