Tag/flag/keyword support

Hi Benny,
I was wondering how high on your roadmap the implementation of tags is.(IMAP tags/flags/keywords, whatever the proper name is.)

It is high on my list, but I haven't started on it yet. Internally, MailMate already handles an arbitrary set of keywords (not sure what I should call them yet, but in IMAP they are called keywords), but it is not exposed in the GUI. What is needed is a GUI for setting/clearing keywords and a generalization of the keyword selection in the mailbox editor (ah, I already use “Keyword”). And there is a big unknown with regard to how well it works with IMAP servers in general. I know there are some servers with no support for keywords, some/all servers with an upper limit on the number of keywords, and I don't think there is any standard for UTF8-encoding. These are all issues I need to deal with as well.
I'll keep this ticket open for tracking any progress/comments on this issue.

Cheers Benny,
I am looking forward to when you get around to implement keywords.

Hi Benny, is there any update on this or do you have a timeline yet?

There is still no GUI for handling custom keywords. The code is better prepared for mapping keywords to file metadata, but the mapping is not implemented yet. In other words, only little progress seen from the perspective of the user.
For users with a need for only a few custom keywords, an alternative is to use the key bindings system. In short, it is possible to bind a key (or sequence of keys) to toggling an IMAP keyword.

Opinion: it would be beneficial to users if the mechanism for storing and associating tags/keywords with an email was done in the manner that MailTags for Mail.app uses. I don't know if they are just using keywords or what, but it's pretty good.

@emory: Sorry, but it is unlikely that I'll do it the same way. As far as I know, MailTags is based on making changes to the headers of messages. For IMAP, this means that every time the tags of a message changes then the message must be re-uploaded to the server. And there is a ripple-effect as well. Every other email client accessing the same account is going to see it as if the message was deleted and a new one needs to be downloaded.
I haven't examined it, but I assume MailTags supports file meta data. It may be possible to stay compatible with that part of MailTags.

Late update to this ticket. Tags have been supported for some time now although some additional GUI support would still be nice, for example, as described in ticket #374.

One vote here for emory's comment relating to MailTags-something like that would be great in MailMate.
Speaking of tags, it'd be great to have a simple way (e.g., right-click on a message or messages) to clear all tags at once. -Thanks!
