Auto Address Save

Reported by Rob Morrison | August 22nd, 2013 @ 12:47 PM

Hello,

Is there a function that allows email contacts to automatically be saved (or through a batch process) into address book or other contact manager?

It is time consuming to always click 'add to contacts' so a way of extracting all the emails contacts that I have sent a message to would be of great benefit.

Many thanks & keep up the good work!
R

Interesting question. The answer is no, but that just means I'll interpret it as a feature request.

Future versions of MailMate are going to allow you to run scripts based on the selected messages. It'll even be possible to execute such scripts automatically when, e.g., a message is added to Sent Messages. That might be useful in your case. (I assume it is possible to add contacts to the address book (Contacts) using AppleScript.)

Things to keep in mind when I have time to look into this:

What if a message has multiple recipients?
What if you want to add the sender of a message instead?

I interact with many project mailing lists at work, as many as 100 at a time, and these lists wink in and out of existence over time. This feature would be very helpful to me, as I’m used to other mail clients automatically remembering addresses I correspond with for autocomplete (but not necessarily cluttering my Address Book).

Ideally, I’d like MailMate to automatically collect addresses I correspond with in a separate Address Book group, “Collected Addresses”, so I can keep them separate from real people but still benefit from autocomplete.

Thank you for considering this feature.

@Matt: Autocomplete is also based on the messages in “Sent Messages”. In other words, after sending 1 message to a particular mailing list you should have address completion. Does this not work?

If you keep your sent messages elsewhere then maybe MmAddressCompletionMailbox could be a useful hidden setting. It would allow you to set up a smart mailbox matching messages to be used for autocompletion, e.g., you could use tagging to tell MailMate how to behave.

I haven't yet added a bundle/command for Address Book (Contacts) integration, but this is mainly because I haven't taken the time to figure out the AppleScript needed for this.

@benny: Ah, the problem may be that I have the Inbox for each of my sources set to “Sent Messages” as I prefer to sort my own replies into the appropriate mailboxes.

Regarding the MmAddressCompletionMailbox setting, I’ll look at using that and perhaps a smart folder that matches messages originating from one of my accounts.

Re: AppleScript, this article on scripting Address Book looks useful.

    Thanks!
