Very slow email address lookup when composing an email

Reported by Gareth King | October 12th, 2022 @ 10:03 AM

I've recently updated to the latest beta of MailMate (v5918) from the previous beta (v5895) and have an issue with very slow lookup of the email address when I compose a new email.

Steps to reproduce:
- Launch MailMate - New Message - Type characters in To: box

It takes around 15 seconds to come up with suggestions. If I close the New Message window after the lookup and compose another message it doesn't have the same delay (I assume it's cached the contacts?).

I do have a large number of Contacts (the Address Panel in MailMate shows '4,127 cards') split across three accounts. One account has 3,736 cards in it - if I disable this account in Settings / Internet Accounts / Contacts then I not longer have a long wait for the email address in MailMate.

I have updated to the latest Test Build (5921) that also has the issue.

I'm using macOS Ventura (beta 11 / 22A537b) so wasn't sure whether to report this issue given it may be a problem with the OS and not MailMate. However given that Ventura will probably be released soon, then I thought it was worth capturing this issue.

I guess the new code is simply very slow when handling 4K cards. Is there anything else which is special about your setup, e.g., is it some kind of online contacts which might be slow for MailMate to access?

You can help me like this:

    • Relaunch MailMate
    • Open the Activity Monitor utility.
    • Locate MailMate and get ready to use the Sample Process menu item.
    • Trigger the delay in MailMate.
    • Start “Sample Process”.
    • Send me the result using “Help > Send Feedback”.

By email, we have determined this is likely related to a large set of Exchange contacts and group expansion in MailMate (for some reason Exchange has a group by default containing all contacts). Some improvements have been implemented, but it's likely more is needed.
