Show attachments without scrolling to the end of the message

Reported by Stefan Doehla | February 8th, 2016 @ 03:17 PM

Hi Benny,

do you think it makes sense to show attachments outside the message without the need to scroll down to the end of the message?

Especially when it's a long discussion over several screen pages, I at least find it cumbersome to scroll to the very end to find attachments (especially when multiple people in the thread attached files, then I have to scroll to the end of every message to find the right attachment). Also, I often overlook attachments as they're not really visible except if I scroll to the end or show the attachments column and do a x-check of message and the list view.

I think TheBat! displayed the attachments at the side of the message, Thunderbird does so below just above the status bar, but both use the regular Mail client UI, not the message. Mail.app has the same behavior as MailMate, but for some reason I tend to overlook attachments there less often than using MailMate.

Let me know what you think.

Cheers,
- Stefan

I had a conversation with Benny about this topic some time ago, but I can't find it now. I tried to "fix" that with some custom CSS but it was not a bulletproof solution. This is something that bugs me too and I confirm that this tends to result in unseen attachments.

    Any news on this, Benny?

    • State changed from “new” to “accepted”

There's a very crude experimental stop-gap solution for placing attachments in front of the message as well as “inline” (usually at the end):

defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmShowAttachmentsFirst -bool YES

This only works in the latest beta.

I haven't done any work on a nicer solution. It'll have to wait until after some other changes -- like a complete re-implementation of the headers view (which I am still working on).

I now see the attachments listed before the message (and at the end). Thanks, this surely helps to avoid the 'overlooking', but I also will be waiting for your re-implementation of the headers view (which might then hopefully also include the attachments).

    Cheers

@Stefan: It might not do that at first, but it's definitely an important first step (the current headers view does not work very well). The new headers view is going to be based on HTML like the message view itself.

@benny: At the current state, is it possible to display the attachments only before the message, not before and after it?

@Felipe: No, if the hidden pref is disabled then attachments are only shown after (or inline if they are not at the end of the message). If the hidden pref is enabled then all attachments are also shown at the top.
