repeated "Failed SSL handshake" errors
Reported by molly brooks | March 27th, 2013 @ 05:53 PM
every now and then, for no reason i can discern, my mail syncing suddenly stops working, and i get these error boxes saying:
"IMAP problem for "molly@{hidden}.com" account MailMate
encountered the following error: "Failed SSL handshake.".
Mailbox: "INBOX[and various folders within]".
{Retry} {Take Account Offline} {Try Later}
(screengrabs attached). i've hit "retry" as many as 10 times, but the only thing that actually seems to work is changing the smtp/imap ports in my settings. the next time it happens (anywhere from a couple days to two weeks later), i change them back.
i started using mailmate recently, and i liked it enough to purchase it after the trial expired, despite this problem. still, it's pretty annoying, and a better solution than going through and changing the ports back and forth every few days would be lovely.
(my email account is hosted at dreamhost, and i'm using osx 10.7.5. i'm not super tech-savvy, but i can follow simple instructions.)
thanks in advance for your help!

It does sound like a server problem although a weird one. Have you tried not setting an explicit port? In that case, MailMate might automatically find the port that works at any given time.
You can also hold down ⇧ when clicking “Retry” and MailMate generates a log file on the Desktop. You can send that log file to me and I'll see if I can spot anything suspicious (http://freron.com/contact).
(Off topic: I removed your email address above in order for it not to be picked up by spam bots.)

I have the same problem with 1und1 which only happens on empty folders like "junk" or "deleted messages". I added a log.

Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane. The latest test version has a workaround for failed SSL handshakes where MailMate automatically retries instead of reporting an error. It might work for you as well.
It's hard to see how it matters that the mailboxes are empty since the handshake is done before selecting a mailbox. I think this was a coincidence.
