Error when synchronizing contacts and calendar folders

Reported by Matthew Bunn | August 27th, 2011 @ 12:26 AM

Am I right in thinking that MailMate does not handle contacts and calendar folders?

I am getting an error message when it tries to download these from my Exchange Server account.

I didn't know such folders could be available over IMAP on Exchange. I'm not sure what they are supposed to contain or whether an IMAP client can do anything with them.

In any case they should only contain messages like any other folder, but maybe MS has done something non-standard.

You should also be able to disable these folders using “Mailboxes ▸ Edit Subscriptions...”.

I would like to know the error message returned and I would like to know more about these special folders (I'll go googling in a minute). Mainly to know if I could somehow help users by making sure these folders are skipped/ignored by default.

I just did a Google search, but I didn't find any useful resources. It seems there may be a difference between Exchange 2003 and 2007.

Do you know how other email applications handle these mailboxes, e.g., Apple Mail?

Since MailMate is an e-mail program, not a calendar or contacts manager, it makes sense that it might have troubles with these folders.

But I'm now getting a similar error message for one folder that as far as I know just contains e-mails (though it's possible it also contains Outlook calendar invitations). Here's the error message:

IMAP problem for "Matt's HKS Mail" account

MailMate encountered the following error: "Warning: Missing size after successful fetch command (1004) for UID 3805.".
    Mailbox: "Meetings".

The options offered are "Retry" "Take Account Offline" or "Take Mailbox Offline". If you do "Retry" you get the same message again. Saying "Take Mailbox Offline" prevents the error from recurring, but of course also means that mailbox is not being synchronized.

    Any thoughts?

I'm assuming this is reproducible. It happens every time for this mailbox?

Was it the same error for the other mailboxes (contants/calendar items)?

The best way you can help me track down this problem is to send me a log of the attempt to synchronize the mailbox. Open the Activity Viewer (⌘0) and then take the mailbox online. When it fails, take it offline and try to locate the relevant log (you select connections in the top of the window and see the logs in the bottom part). Send it in a private email if you like.

    Thanks in advance!

OK, so here's the typical error message, transcribed by hand:

IMAP problem for "Matt's HKS Mail" account

MailMate encountered the following error: "Warning: Missing size after successful fetch command (1004) for UID 3805.".
    Mailbox: "Meetings".

The following activity log includes both an effort to take the "Meetings" folder on-line and a failed effort to send an e-mail.

I cut the output from the ticket in order to not reveal any email addresses.

Sending: It seems that the problem may be that the connection times out. This would also explain why it does not always fail. The default time out value is 15 seconds. I've made a note that I should at least make this configurable - I'll also consider increasing it for the special case of waiting for a reply after transferring a message to an SMTP server.

The log you included did not contain anything from the IMAP connection to the Meetings mailbox. The Activity Viewer shows all existing connections. Typically 1 connection for an SMTP server and up to 4 connections to each IMAP server. You need to locate the connection (attempt) to the Meetings mailbox. You are not the only one with difficulties using the Activity Viewer. It could be improved.

Well, I just turned on the activity viewer and took "Meetings" on-line and waited for it to fail, which it did, but nothing in particular showed up in the Activity Viewer. Don't know what else to send you.

You need to locate the IMAP-connection which contains the attempt to synchronize Meetings (there is a maximum of 4 connections to the Exchange server). You select a connection in the table view and then the log of the connection should be displayed in the bottom part of the window. One of these should contain something a la “SELECT Meetings”. Are all of these logs empty?

If you need to clear a log you can use ⌘K (it clears all logs if no connection is selected).

I'm sorry the Activity Viewer interface is not more straightforward.

I'm closing this ticket due to its age. The issue might have been resolved as a side-effect of other bug fixes.

I just started using Mailmate and also have this problem. I will wait a few days and see if it goes away. If not I will start a new thread.
