BAD User is authenticated but not connected

Reported by vramdal (at gmail) | December 8th, 2016 @ 11:22 AM

When MailMate is synching my folders on Outlook 365, it produces a number of these error messages:

MailMate encountered the following error: “Server response: “D5 BAD User is authenticated but not connected.”.”.
Mailbox: “(Custom Expiration\Manage Folders)”.

Clicking Retry or Try later only postpones the problem.

The folder it has problems with is different from time to time. The sync does not fail completely: I usually get to see at least some new mail in my inbox. However, the error occurs so frequently that MailMate is almost unusable.

According to [1], that error "is a Microsoft's mechanism to shut down chatty clients. The solution would be to login to this account less frequently.". I have looked for settings in MailMate to reduce the number of concurrent connections, for example, but haven't found anything.

Is there a workaround?

It sounds like maybe MailMate is busy-looping with the server for some reason and this then triggers the (not very informative) error message.

You can try taking most of the mailboxes within the account offline. Then take mailboxes online 1 by 1 and make sure they synchronize (the spinner in the mailbox list stops). This might help track down if a specific mailbox is triggering this issue.

You might also want to unsubscribe unused or bogus mailboxes (like Calendar) using “Edit Subscriptions” in the IMAP account editor.

I disabled (took offline) a bunch of the bogus mailboxes, and the problem seems to have gone away - not sure which mailbox exactly that caused the problem. Thanks!
