Documentation Issue: No statement of planned length of support for Mac OS X 10.6.x Snow Leopard

Reported by klktrk | January 29th, 2015 @ 01:10 AM

Hi, I looked through the help materials, and didn't see any statement regarding how long mailmate will be supporting 10.6.8 (snow leopard).

I would like to buy Mailmate, but it would be a shame if I bought it, and then could only get updates and fixes to it for 3 or 4 months before suddenly 10.7+ is required.

I would think a fair number of users would like to have an idea how long they can expect their OS/hardware to be supported before spending $50.

For many reasons (app store, lockdown of software installations, background process handling, usability etc), I will probably not be upgrading my Mac any further after 10.6.8, which to my mind was the last fully usable real operating system Apple made.

Other users might simply not be able to upgrade their OS at all due to hardware constraints, budget, or reliance on software that has never been updated for later operating systems.

Perhaps a projected timeline of support for each major OS version would be a good thing to include in your documentation.

Thank you.

Officially, MailMate currently supports 10.7+ and it's been like that for a very long time. It's stated on the store page, but maybe I should also put it in the manual (it's always a bit risky to put the same information in multiple locations).

In practice, the current public release also supports 10.6 as you have noticed. It'll change soon though. The 64 bit test releases of MailMate require 10.7+. I don't currently provide any guarantee on how long 10.7 is going to be supported, but I also don't think a lot of people have strong feelings about 10.7/10.8 (contrary to 10.6).

It requires extra work to support older OS'es and MailMate is a one-man non-lucrative business. Here is an estimate of the distribution of users by OS (based on update checks in January):

    OS Percentage
    10.10 78.0%
    10.9 16.6%
    10.8 2.4%
    10.7 1.4%
    10.6 1.6%

I hope that answers your question.

Benny thank you for your generous reply. Having developed software, I understand the reasons to not support 10.6 fully. I appreciate your honesty and directness. This is great software and I wish you lots of fun working on it. Looks like I'll stick with my long-dead Eudora after all :).
