I assume this is about the Inbox. Google has a “crippled” implementation of IMAP IDLE which is the extension to IMAP which allows an email client to watch for new messages and changes to existing messages. It simply does not report flag changes including read/unread state.

Does it update if you explicitly “Synchronize” the mailbox? (Or take it offline/online.)

Google fixed this recently, but they rolled back the fix for other reasons. I expect them to reintroduce it soon though.

But you also write “to” other email clients. This should not be affected by the above. Are you sure the mailbox is online? (Check under SOURCES in the mailbox outline.) The Inbox should be written with a bold font to indicate that it is fully synchronized and waiting for changes client or server side.

If you are a new user then this might also be triggered by the fact that MailMate has not yet fully synchronized the account (which can be slow because Google throttles connections when there is a lot of activity).

Sorry if I am not using the correct terms. What I mean is that when I read messages (gmail account) on my phone, for example, then Mac Mail will soon also show that message as being read, while MailMate will not.. or seemingly will, but only sometimes. At the moment it will not. Even though the INBOX is bold, and manual synchronize does not change this.

    Thanks

I have the same (similar?) issue. I read Gmail Inbox messages in Dispatch on my iPhone. Once they are marked as read on my iPhone, on OS X Mail.app updates them as read but MailMate does not. This is for my Gmail account only and manually synchronizing messages doesn't change the read/unread status.

If I read the message in MailMate, the read/unread status will properly sync over to Mail.app and Dispatch for iOS.

I'm experiencing the same issue. Adding myself in order to receive updates.

    I have the same issue.

I've reintroduced an old hack which can be enabled like this:

defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmEnableKeywordsCheckInIDLEForGmail -bool YES

It's only in the 64 bit beta (see http://blog.freron.com).

Does that make a difference in regard to this problem (and sorry for not yet trying to debug it yet -- I was hoping Google would fix it).

I just tried this and it only works if I close MailMate and reopen it.

@Daniel: Thanks for checking. For the record, if I go to the webmail interface and mark a message as read then I can make MailMate update as follows:

    • Select the INBOX folder of the account.
    • Right-click the INBOX (or use the Mailbox menu) to “Synchronize”.

Then it correctly updates. It is my impression that this does also not work for you. Correct?

If that is the case then create server logs for me like this:

    • Open the Activity Viewer (⌥⌘0).
    • Do as I describe above (including trying to explicitly synchronize).
    • Use “Help ▸ Send Server Logs”.

Then I'll see if the logs reveal anything.

    Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem since upgrading to MM 1.8 (upgraded when final 1.8 was released).

With MM 1.7.2 I had MmEnableKeywordsCheckInIDLEForGmail enabled, and MM did update the read state for email read on another device.

MmEnableKeywordsCheckInIDLEForGmail is still enabled, but apparently has no effect for the 32-bit version.

Is there any chance of reinstating MmEnableKeywordsCheckInIDLEForGmail for the 32-bit version, for those of us not ready to switch to 64-bit yet?

I switched to the 64-bit version, and so far so good.
(note that MmEnableKeywordsCheckInIDLEForGmail was already enabled)

@Jonathan: Thanks for the feedback. This might be a sign that MmEnableKeywordsCheckInIDLEForGmail does fix the problem for some users. The problem is then the users for which using “Synchronize” does not fix the problem.

I have a similar(?) issue: gmail messages moved to Archive on one device appear in the Inbox when I launch MailMate on another device. Manually synching the Inbox does not help, nor does running the hack:

defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmEnableKeywordsCheckInIDLEForGmail -bool YES

Archiving the message on Google's web interface is reflected correctly on all devices running MailMate.
