mailmate beachball

Reported by N S | September 26th, 2014 @ 09:42 AM

I am trialling mailmate (Day 7). I end up with a beachball almost all the time. This may have arisen from my reorg of IMAP folders on day 1 or 2, I forget the details. Having moved my sent items folder to another folder, I have taken my old sent items offline because it took a long time to update. I kept getting the beachball as I composed new messages. The problem has become much worse now that I consolidated the Archive folders I had accumulated from a few different mail clients. I tried rebuilding the database but it did not help. I also see in the activity viewer that Mailmate is trying to "APPEND INBOX/Archive (\Seen)" many many times.

Other possibly relevant things:
1. About 50K messages
2. Talking to an exchange server on office365.com (which hosts our work email)
3. process sample file attached.

First update to the latest test version: Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences (currently r4520). Exchange IMAP is quite buggy/primitive, but the latest test version should work around these issues (at least the known ones).

The APPEND's mean that MailMate is trying to upload messages to the server. That should usually only happen when composing new messages or importing messages into MailMate. This could also be a side-effect of some of the issues with Exchange.

If you believe all of your emails exist server-side (check via Webmail) then it might be best with a clean start, that is, simply deleting all the message-related folders:

    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Database.noindex
    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Messages
    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Attachments

    And anything related to rebuilding:

    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/FilesForRebuilding*
    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/OldDatabase*

But only do that if you are sure you are not losing any message which have not yet been uploaded to the server (in particular, sent messages).

There is a chance that you have a lot of duplicates on the server now. We can deal with that when/if the above solves your primary problem.

Thanks for trying out MailMate. I'm sorry it has not been an ideal experience so far.

Thanks for the quick response. I have now updated to the latest release (using option key). I am getting the following error (may or may not be related, and I started getting this from just before updating the software):

MailMate encountered the following error: “Server response: “.GINGER_SOFTWARE_noMark BAD Command Error. 10”.”.
    Mailbox: “INBOX/Archive”.

The appends might be because I moved the Archive folder elsewhere. Mailmate may be uploading each message to the new location. Mailmate has stopped the append now, but especially given the above error, I cant be 100% sure all messages are uploaded (there seems to be no good way to check the number of messages on my webmail interface :( )

Moving messages/mailboxes should only result in APPEND if you have moved them between different accounts. In any case, when moving messages MailMate takes great care not deleting a message at its source mailbox until AFTER it has been successfully copied or uploaded (APPEND) to the destination mailbox. Therefore, in theory, moving messages should never result in losing messages. It can result in duplicates, but that is less serious.

The server error looks very strange to me (the error number looks like a very generic Exchange error). Do you know what GINGER_SOFTWARE_noMark means?

If you like, you can open the Activity Viewer (⌥⌘0), trigger the error, and then use “Help ▸ Send Server Logs” to send me detailed logs of what happens.
