HTML Editor

Reported by Sebastian Tischer | September 21st, 2014 @ 09:18 PM

Hi,

at first I want to say thank you for this amazing piece of software you created.

Unfortunately I am dealing with lots of html mails and I found out that when I reply to an HTML mail, this gets rendered as plain text.

Is it possible that besides the markdown-html rendering the old html rendering is beeing kept to make the old message look as nice as when it arrived?

Thank you very much for your help and your reply...

Best

Just for the record, it's impossible to reliably ensure that HTML in a reply (or forwarded message) looks as it did when it was received. HTML is simply not designed for that (HTML with embedded HTML).

But I'm aware that something better than converting to plain text is needed — especially for forwarding. My current plan is to handle this by letting HTML be part of a reply or forwarded messages in a non-editable way. That is, I can include HTML in the plain text editor using some kind of placeholder, and MailMate can then merge the plain text (converted to HTML) and the HTML before sending. This is the part that is technically impossible to do reliably, but as you know from other email clients then it works well enough for most people in most email clients :-)

A solution like the above would then also still allow it to work even if the user prefers an external plain text editor.

I'll track any progress on this solution in this ticket (for forwarding it is covered by ticket #875).

Wonderful, thank you very much for the fast reply. I thnk a solution where MailMate renders the old HTML in the answer message like other clients do it would satisfy a lot of users. :)

    Really thank you very much.

May I ask what timeframe you can give for a first possible implementation?

Best and thank you again for your great support and help

Just to be clear, it is unlikely that I'll implement an HTML editor as seen in most other email clients. There are hundreds of other features I consider more important.

With respect to the solution described in this ticket: It's a relatively high priority since I'm aware this is a very important problem for many users. I've said that for a long time though and therefore I do not dare to give you a time frame. The main problem has been that I've been unsure how to solve it best (there is no perfect solution), but I think I know how I would like it to work now.

    This sounds wonderful :)

I don't need an html editor at all, I am more than satisfied when I see the original formated email below my answer (as html)...

Your solution is exactly what I was looking for and I am more then thrilled knowing this is high-priority.

Thank you very much for your great help :)

    Best

Just wanted to bump this one back up. I've no need for HTML editing: plain text and markdown is fine. However, I work in an Outlook heavy environment and the fact that MailMate strips the formatting my colleagues messages when I reply makes it hard for me to commit to a full transition to MailMate.

    Thanks for considering.

@Alan: It has taken a long time, but I believe I'm getting pretty close to a solution to this problem and various related problems. If you want to be an early tester when it's ready then you can write me an email (Help ▸ Send Feedback).
