Custom Search always defaults to field = From
Reported by ronin-126265 (at lighthouseapp) | November 22nd, 2010 @ 07:43 PM
It would be useful if Custom Search defaulted to the last field = ... value chosen.
This is because I tend to search on field = Unquoted Content, and it is a little annoying to have to change it every time. (Particularly when the text focus is on the search field, so I could just type what I was looking for and search

Good point.

+1 for this!
This is a somewhat minor annoyance, but it annoys me literally every single day of my life... the cumulative annoyance is probably now roughly equivalent to killing one fuzzy cute kitten.

Btw, that ancient request's fulfillment would still practically solve the issue (of mine) to recall conversations with a single shortcut + name, by allowing me to search again for ‘any adress’ rather than default ‘from’.

In the next update you are going to be able to explicitly save the
default mailbox search filter.[state:fixcommitted]

(Code word 2082) Sorry, this seems to (not) work as in previous versions.
Neither in mailbox search, nor in ‚all msgs‘ mode.

Did you read the release notes with the instructions on how to set the default search?
-
Thomas Hanke May 3rd, 2011 @ 08:31 PM
There are instructions? … Oh.
I clicked on the kitty link, read the original request and … bang!
Okay, works for me with both search functions.
The last weeks I've been falling in love with the conversation view more and more. The results are best with 'any address'.
Anyway, that's why I'm only a 'beta tester' … not an alpha one.
Thanks a lot!

Benny, this is great! I've set my default search to
- Any Address contains ____
- Subject contains ____
- Unquoted Body Text contains ____
I already have date-oriented mailbox folders, so I simply choose the appropriate one and do a mailbox search (^⌥⌘F is my friend!). I love having the focus in the right place -- and that [tab] and [shift][tab] work exactly as expected, including tabbing into (and out of!) the message-list panel itself. Wonderful!
Query: I cannot find a keyboard-centric way of cancelling a custom search. [Escape] doesn't seem to do it, and I see nothing in the menus....
Wait! I chanced upon it: ^⌥⌘F toggles the searching on and off! Perhaps a change to the menu item ("Hide Search"? "Dismiss Search"?) to signify the change in function?
Anyway, I love the new default search filter function. Thank you!

Escape ⎋ is problematic (implementation-wise) because it is also used
to cancel Find (⌘F), but you are the second one to ask today, so maybe
I should try to find a way to make it work.It should probably be “Show/Hide Mailbox Search”, because then
“Show” would indicate that it is also possible to “Hide”. But if
I can make ⎋ work then I guess it doesn't matter much. With regard to tabbing. Note that you can also navigate through messages
using ⌘↓ and ⌘↑ (without moving focus to the outline). -

@Erik: thanks for that hint!
Benny, this is great! I've set my default search to Any Address contains ____ Subject contains ____ Unquoted Body Text contains ____
Once again, Mailmate's flexibility exceeds my creative thinking.
Now, I only need a larger screen to fit it all into.
@Benny: some issue: 5 tabs to get to the next text field. I've got no idea to avoid that. I'd opt for Opt-Down or something, but I guess that's against the (GUI) rules.
Btw, there isn't a 'catch all text' search option, is there?
-
Thomas Hanke May 4th, 2011 @ 02:19 PM
'Catch all text': i.e. 'quoted' and 'unqoted' text.
Perhaps even: any text, i.e. plus 'any adress'.
Sometimes, clients use keywords (mostly their own name …) only in quotes of my msgs.
The correspondence view does its job well, but some msgs. slip through.

@Thomas: I was very close to starting on making ⌥⇥ and ⌥⇤ jump between text fields like a super-tab compared to tab. It was the non-standard GUI feeling that kept me from it. But I was also sure someone would ask. You came first :-)
There is no “all text” feature. Partly because I want to encourage that users only search relevant text and partly because the implementation of body text search is currently relatively slow (always linear) which is already a problem for > 100K messages.

Thomas Hanke May 4th, 2011 @ 02:52 PM
@Benny: Well, I'm glad you didn't spoil my ⌥⇥ shortcut used for windows of an app.
For me, Ctrl-Tab is free at the moment unless you add tabs to the mix…
What about a menu entry without pre-assigned shortcut?
We, i.e. me, would be free to change it to some reasonable shortcut and find a mouse with even more keys ;-)'All text': well, I'm quite fine with correspondence view, aside from some left out msgs.
This may be mainly due to less-than-optimal msg structures of others.
(Is it so complicated to add one's name to one's address?)I'll see if I can identify some clear-cut issues where MM is to blame.
-
benny May 4th, 2011 @ 03:01 PM
@Thomas: I just discovered that ⌥⇥ can be used in the message view to jump between links (probably works in any WebView in any app). I
didn't know that. Didn't you once ask for such a feature? And maybe
that'll free up ⌥⇥ for my use since its is in the same ball-park as
jumping between links (although I would use it as a super-jump instead
of a details-jump). -
Thomas Hanke May 4th, 2011 @ 03:31 PM
Oh, yes.
To provide some moral arguments: some apps provide some shortcuts to jump to textfields (on some system, I'm sure).
Links: Yeah… I think I'd asked for that at some point. And I heard about the shortcut, too, but I've never used it, either – most sites just tend to cram too many links up and down the page.
In MM, I solved it by means of the 'Open Link' Service.
The solution'd mainly force me to retrain my tabbing muscles.
Well, some of the ShiftLock combos are free on my keyboard for window tabbing, since I never got into using Shift/Ctrl-ShiftLock as ‘left (forward) delete’.
