Is it possible to have the message content in a column on the
right hand side rather than
showing underneath subject headings?

Yes, if you mean like what you get with “View ▸ Layout ▸ Widescreen”?

next question... is there any way of increasing the space between email subject headings and putting a line under
each email- i find that's easier viewing.. -

- State changed from “new” to “closed”
If you mean in the messages outline then you can try putting the focus
in the outline and then select “Format ▸ Show Fonts”. Then notice
the line height delta option.[state:closed]
