Please do fix the shortcut system!

Reported by Thomas Hanke | March 8th, 2011 @ 03:57 PM

Sorry for the harsh formulation, but it just struck me again:
MailMate's shortcuts do not work reliably and do not synch with the Pref Pane Keyboard.

The pref pane doesn't see (all of) your shortcuts, it seems, and MailMate distorts those in the pane.

We had that with 'flagged' msgs. It ended up as ⌘-D in the pane, displayed with Shift-⌘-D. And it's working only most of the time, not 100%.
Edit: just realized it's now the same shortcut as 'Edit as new message'. Never got this until now.

Now, it's 'Delete Mailbox' and 'Hide Mailboxes'. By incident, I found out it's possible to assign them to the same shortcut, action depending on the type of mailbox I'm in.

Btw, it looks like the 'Mailbox' section of the 'Edit' menu is the same as most of the middle part of the 'Mailbox' menu. (1928)

I'd like to help you Thomas, but I kind of get confused when reading some of your tickets. It's like reading your thoughts and not being sure of the final conclusion. (Sorry if that is a harsh formulation. I really do want to help.)

I don't think I do anything out of the ordinary which should cause problems, but I am willing to look into it. Could you reduce this to a single problem: A specific menu item and the erroneous behavior you see. We'll see if I can fix that and move on from there.

Thanks for the hint on the Edit menu. I've removed the duplicate menu items.

I'm sorry, I had some other tasks but tried to make my point.
    Ok, let's try.

    First issue:

MM doesn't remove shortcuts when the Apple keyboard pane assigns them to some menu entry. (I got it backwards some hours ago, sorry!)

    • Assign a shortcut used for some function to some other menu entry.
    • Expected behavior: shortcut for new function, removed from old one.
    • Fails sometimes

Ok, after some figgling I've got an idea for a pattern: it's about the 'toggling' menu entries with 'Show/Hide'.

Example: I assigned ctrl-opt-cmd-D to 'Delete Mailbox'.

'Delete Mailbox...' vs. 'Show/Hide Mailboxes' ended up with the same shortcut: ctrl-opt-cmd-D.

After some testing: same with 'Hide/Show Message View', ctrl-opt-cmd-H and 'Forward as Attachment'

I suspect it's not MM's original setting for the 'Show/Hide' menu entries but none of them is in the keyboard pref pane.

Could it be that the shortcuts got mangled up somehow on my Mac?
Let me know if I should send any files you or whether it may help to delete/restore some settings.

+- Flagged, +- Read: Sorry to mention it again, yes it is #45.

But it just doesn't work, it's apparently limited to those two flags, and I haven't seen this issue elsewhere (well, in well-behaved Mac citizens...).

Neat, #86 as internal link format.

I'm not sure if anything is mangled in your setup, but part of the
problem is that some of the menu shortcuts you try to override are
created dynamically by MailMate. I'm not sure I can (easily) do anything
about that, but I'll look into it. Don't expect it soon though.

With respect to Flagged/Read, something else is going on. I'm guessing
it may be related to the dynamic titles of these items, but I'm not
sure. As stated in #45 I don't think I'm doing anything out of the
    ordinary here.

Thanks for the detailed description of the problem and for the hint on
referencing tickets. I'll keep this ticket open in order to track any
progress on the subject (and for others to share their frustration).

Since there has been no progress on this issue I'll close it. The recommended approach to having alternative keyboard shortcuts is now to use custom key bindings.
