Mailbox Color Organizing

Reported by jaydonaldson | June 6th, 2014 @ 07:09 AM

I'm having trouble clearly distinguishing my messages in All Message (or within mixed Smart Mailboxes).

Something that would save me a lot of time and efficiency would be the ability to color organize what source mailbox a message came from when looking at the "All Message" or a smart mailbox view. Often I'm dealing with the same subject using different email addresses and thus would prefer not to go back and forth between mailboxes to sort which is to/from which account. A simple ability to color messages from a particular mailbox would allow me to see at a glance what I am dealing with and then drill down accordingly. This would also help with things like search where the ability to quickly determine the source mailbox would save me time.

I've tried include the source mailbox as a column to help with this, but because it reads "INBOX - xxxxx" it takes up a lot of visual space and just muddles things.

A simple color management system doesn't seem too complicated and I don't think it would compromise any other efficiencies within Mailmate. Thanks!

    Or perhaps there is a way to create a custom column creation system in the mail view so that it can be

    IF "message is from MAILBOX xxxx" then COLUMN "USER LABEL" reads "xxxx" (or is COLOR RED)

    so then you can label with words, colors, numbers, whatever someone might want---

    Bascially, I would just love a way to clearly visually distinguish messages of different types without having to move them into their own folders (which I also have)

    I'm not sure about the coloring (I might want to reserve that to be used in relation to tags), but the customization you suggest is actually possible. It's rather low-level though and might not be straightforward for you to do.

    Ticket #445 shows how to create a custom column, but for your column you should find inspiration in the default set of columns found here:

    MailMate.app/Contents/Resources/MmMessagesOutlineView/outlineColumns.plist

    The flag column is probably the closest thing to what you want if you need conditions, but you might also be satisfied with simply redefining the Source column:

    source =
    {
        title = "Source";
        sortKey = "#source";
        formatting = { formatString = "${#source-name}"; };
    };

    (Note that the #source-name variable is an ugly hack that doesn't work for sort keys.)

    Made the custom column and it definitely gets me closer. Thanks for the help!

    • State changed from “new” to “resolved”

    Great. I'll close the ticket, but I'll still be thinking about some kind of coloring of messages based on tags and/or mailbox location.
