Exchange 2010, Archive, Duplicate messages
Reported by Prem Thomas | January 14th, 2014 @ 04:41 AM
I'm using Mailmate 1.7.2 (3905) on OS X 10.9.1 and connecting to an Exchange 2010 server (14.3.123.0). I created an Archive folder on that account from within Mailmate. After archiving about a year's worth of email into that folder, I began noticing many duplicate emails in the archive. These were not present in the Inbox. I checked the Message count in the Archive folder for that account and compare it to the Message count in the Archive folder reported by the Exchange web browser client (Outlook Web Access). The counts agree. However, the web client does NOT show any duplicate messages in the same Archive folder. If I look in Mailmate, there are multiple duplicates.
An earlier ticket, #183 reported something similar, but is reported as fixed. I don't know if this reflects a new Exchange bug.
Thanks.

If there are duplicates in MailMate and not in the web browser -- and at the same time the counts agree then it implies that messages are missing in MailMate which are in the web browser.
The problem in ticket #183 was that MailMate uploaded a message and subsequently wasn't able to locate the message just uploaded. This triggered MailMate to try again (to make sure the message was not lost). If there is still such an issue then I need some debug output.
Do you ever get any error messages about failed IMAP actions?
You can open the Activity Viewer (⌥⌘0) and then try moving a message to the Archive mailbox. Then click on one of the Exchange connections and see if you can locate any error messages. If you can then I would like to see this part of the log.

The introspection capabilities built into Mailmate, such as the messages in the lower pane of the Activity Viewer, are impressive!
I selected all messages associated with each row of the suspect IMAP account in Activity Viewer, copied/pasted and searched for "Error" in TextMate without any hits. I then selected cases of duplicated messages in Mailmate, right clicked, and chose 'Show in Finder.' This revealed two .eml files associated with each set of duplicates (sometimes triplicates or even quads). In the Outlook Web Access browser client, these repeated files were not shown, though it reported the same message count in the Archive folder as Mailmate. When I delete the duplicates within Mailmate, the message counts in both clients decrease.
An "ls -la *.eml | wc -l" in the local Mailmate Archive folder reports the same number as reported by Mailmate and the web browser client. I believe the web client is reporting the accurate number of messages on the server but not showing the duplicates in the User Interface. If I were to count all the messages in the web client, I suspect it would not agree with the reported count.
Very bizarre behavior. I don't see recent instances of the duplicates; only about one month distant. Also, though I go back and delete the duplicates, when I later open Mailmate and scroll in that folder, I seem to see more duplicates--as though they are replicating....

I'm not sure there is anything I can do about this at the moment. If you find some kind of reproducible behavior then let me know. MailMate would only create duplicates if it has problems uploading a message, but then you would typically get a lot of duplicates and it would only happen for your drafts/sent messages.
You can identify non-uploaded messages by enabling the UID column in the messages outline. A message with no UID has not been successfully uploaded to the server.
I'll close the ticket for now, but you can still add comments.
