How to turn off the incoming mail "ding"

Sorry, I'm new and I can't find this sort of thing. I can't think this is the right way to get this answered, but where else can I go? Help doesn't have it. How do I turn off the "ding" for an incoming message?

Sorry, this is the result of a really bad GUI and it's been like that for quite a while: #226.
The answer is: Go to the Counters preferences pane and understand that the four dots represent four different counters (potentially with 4 different sounds).
