Custom location for mailbox doesn't 'stick'

I've been trying to relocate the messages folder to an external drive. However, I'm experiencing unexpected behaviours:
- When I select my preferred location, 'External SSD', an empty folder 'com.freron.MailMate' is created on that drive. However, the message folders are moved to another 'com.freron.MailMate' folder created directly under my user's Home folder on the internal drive.
- After restarting Mailmate, the custom folder in preferences shows my Home folder as the custom location, overriding my previous selection of 'External SSD'.
Deselecting 'Custom location' reinstates the message folders to the default Application Support location, leaving empty 'com.freron.MailMate' folders in my Home folder and in the previously selected 'External SSD' location. Reselecting 'Custom location' and my preferred external drive location replicates the above.
I'm using build 5937, and have confirmed that External SSD is being indexed by Spotlight. The drive is not encrypted or password protected.
