default columns don't stick

This seems to be a problem only in my inbox, not other mailboxes or smart folders. The columns won't stay the way I set them. I have flag as the furthest left column, for example, but when I switch to another folder and switch back to the inbox, there is no flag column anymore. I tried setting the columns as I want them and clicking to set this as the default, but that doesn't change anything.
